New Surgeon Joins PVH
Penobscot Valley Hospital has a new surgeon who will be providing a wide range of surgery using “Minimally Invasive” techniques in Lincoln. Dr. Samer Sbayi is originally from Toronto, Canada, but most recently, he did his sub specialty training at the University of Texas Health Center in San Antonio. He also worked extensively with the Veterans Administration Hospital in that same city. Monday, September 8 was the doctor’s first day on the job at PVH.
Dr. Sbayi did his undergraduate work in Toxicology and Pharmacology at the University of Toronto. He studied medicine at UTESA in the Dominican Republic and did his surgical training in Trenton, New Jersey under Seton Hall University.
“I’ve always been active in the community, especially working with youth and health-related efforts,” says Sbayi, who volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank. “I realized a career in medicine would allow me to have an even greater impact on people’s health.”
Dr. Sbayi’s wife, Rania Tayara studied biochemistry in Toronto before deciding to concentrate on raising their four children, who range in age from 7 to 16. “We’ve felt very welcomed by the people of Lincoln,” says Dr. Sbayi. “The children have already made some great friends and are really enjoying their schools.”
“PVH is very excited to have Dr. Sbayi as part of our team,” says CEO David A. Shannon. “He has a very relaxed and kind manner about him, and I know the patients will enjoy working with him to improve their health.”
“Surgery is a very decisive treatment. Often Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) allows us, as physicians, to get patients back to work and home to their families sooner than conventional treatments,” says Dr. Sbayi, who says he believes listening is a crucial aspect of customer service. “I really strive to hear my patients’ concerns and feelings, so I can find ways to help and make them feel comfortable.”
The surgeon says he also tries to be as detailed as possible when speaking with patients before a procedure, including information about what’s going to happen, recovery time, medications, and other information. “I never want my patients to feel as though they’re in the dark,” says Dr. Sbayi. “I have my own family, so I understand the concerns that come with a loved one needing treatment or surgery. I want to give people the same time and consideration that I would want for my wife or my children.”
Dr. Sbayi says moving to Lincoln has been an easy transition for his family. “After meeting the hospital management and some of their family members, I realized this was a very comfortable, honest environment, and I knew I would enjoy being part of the PVH team.” The beauty of the region also helped attract the family to Lincoln. “We all enjoy hiking, canoeing, and kayaking, and we’re really looking forward to the skating and skiing this winter.”
If you are interested in procedures available through Dr. Samer Sbayi at Penobscot Valley Hospital, please speak with your family physician.
